National Federation of Afro-American Women is established.

1895

Founded by Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, it is created at a convention at Berkeley Hall at 4 Berkeley Street. According to St. Pierre Ruffin, the convention is held in Boston because only Boston had a suitable “atmosphere” for such a meeting. A gathering of African-American women’s clubs from around the country, it also holds sessions at the Charles Street Meeting House. The organization merges with the Washington National League to form the National Association of Colored Women in 1896.
